Banks in India: Bank is referred to as the spine of a country’s economy. Banks play a major role in providing financial stability, financial literacy and defining a country’s financial health. In India, there are many banks which include Public Sector Banks (PSB) also referred as Government Banks, Private Sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks, Foreign Banks, Small Finance banks, Payment banks, Co-operative Banks which include State Co-Operative Banks and Urban Co-operative Banks, Local Area Banks. 1. Commercial Banks

Commercial bank is a financial institution which can accept deposits from the public and give loans for consumption purposes. It includes private and public sector banks. Main role of a commercial bank is to provide financial services to the general public and business. It also ensures economic and social stability of the country. And put efforts for sustainable growth of the economy. Commercial banks in India can be categorized in four types which are Public Sector Banks, Private sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks, and Foreign Banks.

Public Sector Banks in India

After amalgamation of banks in India, there are 12 public sector banks in India. The public sector banks are also known as nationalized banks or government banks. These banks are not fully owned by the government of India, rather the government owns major shares of these banks. See details of public sector banks in India below.

1. State Bank of India –

State Bank of India is the largest Indian multinational public sector bank. It is also the 43rd largest bank in the world. It has 23% of market share by Asset and 25% share of total loan and deposit market in India. State Bank of India is also the fifth largest employer of India with nearly 250,000 employees. It has presence in Australia, Bangladesh, Bahrin, Botswana, Canada, China, Mauritius, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South Korea, South Africa, UK, US, and Nigeria. 

The Government of India owns 56.92% stake in State Bank of India, which is the lowest among the public sector banks in India.

2. Bank of Baroda –

Bank of Baroda, also known as BoB, is the second largest Indian Public Sector Bank, which has its headquarter in Vadodara. It has 100 overseas offices and a total business of 218 billion US Dollars. It was founded on 20 July 1908. The Government of India owns 63.97% shares in the bank. Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank, both public sector banks, were amalgamated into Bank of Baroda. It has 8214 Branches across India.

3. Canara Bank –

Canara Bank is the third largest public sector bank in India. It was established in 1906 and has its headquarters in Bangalore. Canara Bank has 9877 branches across India. The bank could achieve revenue of 11 billion US dollars in 2021. Recently Syndicate bank, a nationalised bank was amalgamated with Canara Bank. Canara Bank is headed by Mr. Lingam Venkata Prabhakar as MD & CEO of the bank. The government of India owns 69.3% share in Canara Bank.

4. Punjab National Bank –

Punjab National Bank, also called PNB, is the 4th largest nationalized bank in India. The government of India owns 76.9% share in Punjab National Bank. It was founded in 1894.  The bank has over 180 million customers, 12,248 branches across India. It is headquartered in Delhi. The bank is currently headed by Mr. Atul Kumar Goel as MD & CEO of the bank.

5. Indian Bank –

Indian Bank is the 5th largest nationalized bank in India. The government of India owns 88.1% share in Indian Bank. It was founded in 1907 and has its headquarters in Chennai. Total business of the bank has touched ₹1,010,000 crore (US$130 billion) as on 31 March 2022. In the process of amalgamation, Allahabad bank was merged with Indian bank.

6. Union Bank of India –

Union Bank of India, also known as UBI, is the 6th largest nationalized bank in India. The government of India owns 89.1% share in the bank. Corporation Bank and Andhra Bank, both nationalised banks, were merged in Union Bank of India during amalgamation process in 2019. Smt. A Manimekhalai is the MD & CEO of Union Bank of India. It has 9316 branches across India. It was founded in 1919 and has headquarters in Mumbai.

7. Bank of India –

Bank of India, also known as BoI, was founded in 1906 and headquartered in Mumbai. BoI is a founding member of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide InterBank Financial Telecommunications). The government of India owns 89.1% share in the bank. The bank has 5430 branches in India. Mr. Atanu Kumar Das is the MD & CEO of Bank of India.

8. Central Bank of India –

Central Bank of India was founded in 1911 and has headquarters in Mumbai. Mr. Tapan Ray is non-executive chairman of the bank. The government of India owns 89.8% share in the bank. As on 31 March 2021, the bank has a network of 4,608 branches across India.

9. Bank of Maharashtra –

10. Uco Bank –

11. Indian Overseas Bank –

12. Punjab & Sind Bank –

Punjab & Sind Bank was founded in 1908 and has headquarters in New Delhi. Swarup Kumar Saha is MD & CEO of the bank. The government of India owns 97.1% share in the bank. 2. Small Finance Banks in India

Small Finance banks are opened with an aim to enhance financial literacy and financial inclusion majorly. These banks generally finance to small business units, small and marginal farmers, micro and small industries and unorganized sector entities. Small Finance Banks can be promoted either by individuals, corporate, trusts or societies. The firms must have a capital of at least ₹200 crore (US$13 million) and promotor must have 10 years’ experience in banking and finance to get a license of Small Finance Bank. 3. Payments Banks in India

 Payments Banks can accept a restricted deposit (currently limited to Rs. 200,000) per customer and this may be increased further. These banks cannot issue loans and credit cards to its customers, but it can open current and saving accounts with issuing Debit Cards, online or mobile banking facilities. 4. Co-operative Banks

Cooperative banks serve an important role in rural areas. It can also operate in urban areas but to serve small industry and self-employed workers. They are registered under the Cooperative Societies Act, 1912. They are regulated by the Reserve Bank of India under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and Banking Laws (Application to Cooperative Societies) Act, 1965. 5. Local Area Banks

Local Area Banks were set up with the objectives of providing an institutional mechanism for promoting rural and semi-urban savings and for providing credit for viable economic activities in local areas. These Banks can operate and open branches in a maximum of 3 geographically contiguous districts. Governed by the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, they cannot borrow funds from the Reserve Bank of India, like other scheduled commercial banks.
