Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana: One of the most popular Government schemes is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Honourable prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi announced with a vision of providing home to all at affordable rate. PMAY is also one of the most successful Government initiatives. Initially the PMAY scheme was launched on 25 June 2015 with a target of completing the mission till 2022. The Government has further extended the scheme till 31 December 2024 on demand of states and territories.
What is the PMAY scheme all about?
PM Awas Yojana, basically covers urban areas in India which includes 4341 towns. The PMAY scheme gives priority to 500 class-I cities. PM Awas Yojana Scheme, provides beneficiaries PMAY interest rate subsidy at 6.50% p.a. for 20 years of loan period. PMAY -U, mainly focuses on Middle Income Groups (MIG), Low Income Groups (LIG) and Economically weaker sections (EWS).

Type of PMAY Scheme –
The scheme is divided into two categories. i.e. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban.
1. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin –
PM Awas Yojana was previously known as the Indira Awas Yojana which was renamed as PMAY – G in 2016. Delhi and Chandigarh are not covered under this Government scheme. The scheme mainly focuses on rural area affordable housing. Under PM Awas Yojana Gramin scheme, the Central Government and state government share the cost of house development. In plain regions the sharing is 60:40 and North-eastern and hilly areas it is 90:10 respectively. After development of housing units and identification of beneficiaries, the government hands over the unit to selected beneficiaries.

2. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban –
PM Awas Yojana Urban is designed to focus on Urban Area affordable housing. The scheme is launched in 3 phases till now which are April 2015 to March 2017, April 2017 to March 2019 and April 2019 to Dec 2024.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana eligibility and process –
PMAY Eligibility – The government uses “The Socio Economic and Caste Census of 2011” to identify and select beneficiaries. However, Village Panchayat and Tehsils give their suggestions and views before finalization of beneficiary list.
PM Awas Yojana Process – Once a customer applies for a PMAY home loan under the PM Awas scheme, the application will be sent to the Nodal Agency by bank or Financial Institutions. The Nodal Agency will check eligibility of the application. If there is no discrepancy or doubt, the application will be forwarded to the National Housing Bank to release the subsidy. The lender will receive the PMAY subsidy amount from National Housing Bank and will credit directly to the loan account of the borrower. It takes around 3-4 months to complete the process and get the PMAY subsidy amount.

How apply for the scheme online –
The government has provided an PMAY online portal or platform, https://pmaymis.gov.in. The user has to enter his/ her Adhar number to start a PMAY application under the PM Awas scheme. The portal also provides beneficiary list which are finalized for PMAY subsidy. Also, a user can check the status of the application on this portal.
