Cyber Fraud: Banking frauds, Recover lost money
Prevent your money from Cyber Frauds, Tips to save your bank account from hackers
Cyber Fraud: Digital transactions have become so common and convenient that every other person is using online fund transfer facilities. As data published by NPCI, UPI transactions have crossed the volume of 6579.63 Mn valuing Rs. 10,72,792.68 Cr. Which is a huge number, and it shows interest and convenience of online fund transfer. When we see it as a facility to bank customers, many fraudulent people are using this as a tool to rob your hard-earned money. Cyber Frauds in banking have increased with steep growth in the number of incidents. Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks and regulating authorities are publishing many advisories to prevent this fraud. But miscreants successfully target people who are less techno savvy or less aware of these cyber frauds.
There are several ways, how fraudsters trap you to rob your money, which are –
- Vishing
- Phishing
- Smishing
- Sim Swap
- Money Mule
- Trojan
Let’s understand more about these and discuss in detail.
Vishing:
Vishing is when a fraudster on a phone call poses himself as a bank or financial institution employee and collects your sensitive details like Net banking passwords, Pins, OTP, card expiry date, CVV. Many of us have experienced this when a person calls you and offers you a new card, activation of account, renewal of insurance, encashing reward points etc.

Phishing:
You must have received emails with a link to update your details urgently to activate your account or update data in your bank account. Phishers are now also using phone calls and messages to collect your personal data like account numbers, pins, passwords, and card details. To prevent this, Gmail has enabled a feature which tells about that email may be a phishing email. Various caller Id mobile apps are available on play store which warn you about fraud calls and messages.
Smishing:
Almost every person who uses emails has received an email congratulating you on winning a lottery or bonus prize or job offers. Fraudsters ask you to provide bank details to claim the reward and collect your data. Now these fraudulent people have started sending messaging and phone calls to target bank customers.
Sim Swap:
After collecting your data, the fraudster blocks your contact number registered with your bank account. Then he gets new sim from the provider companies by reporting loss or damage to actual sim. After this he has full control of your bank account and money.

Money Mule:
This is a less common way and very smartly used by fraudsters. They will ask a person to receive money in his account in exchange for a gift. The person who received money in the account is called money mule. Then they will ask you to transfer money to another money mule’s account. By doing this they create a chain to hide themselves from legal action. When it comes to the notice of police, people involved in this chain get in trouble.
Trojan:
The fraudsters will call or ask you to install a software which is actually a virus and collect all your data. The virus or the software is called Trojan. It can be attached in email, mobile app on play store, digital ads displayed in apps and games. Once trojan is installed, the hacker will get full access to your mobile and computer. The hacker uses this as a tool to delete files and steal your sensitive data.

What can you do if you are a victim of banking cyber fraud?
Once you get trapped by banking fraudsters, the first and foremost thing is not to lose your patience. Do not sit back or get blank. Complaint to your bank and if possible, submit a complaint in writing by personally visiting the bank branch. Lodge a complaint with cyber crime police online or offline. You can also register your complaints over toll free numbers issued by authorities. I have mentioned toll free numbers and links to register cyber fraud complaints. When you report after the incident to the bank within 3 days, it will be the bank’s full responsibility to recover the amount lost. If you complain after 3 days, banks are less responsible for the transaction.
Further, If you have shared OTP or card details, you will be solely responsible for the transaction and the bank will not take any responsibility for the transaction. However, you can lodge a complaint with cyber police and expect recovery.
