This type of car insurance is not mandatory to own legally. If you buy only own damage car insurance which basically covers own-damages incurred by your car in any unfortunate event such as road accident, natural calamity, fire, explosion, theft, riot, etc. 

However, you need to buy a third party cover also with this standalone own-damage car insurance to drive cars on Indian roads.
